KazGASA welcomes a new member of its leadership team – Nurkhat Zhakiyev, who has been appointed Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation, reporting directly to Bakhtiyar Asylbayuly Sabdenaliev, Rector of KazGASA.
Nurkhat Zhakiyev is a PhD in Physics and holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics, with more than 10 years of experience in science, innovation and higher education.
From 2020 to 2025, he headed the Department of Science and Innovation at Astana IT University, where he oversaw the implementation of the university’s research strategy, attracted grant funding, supported startup development and contributed to increasing research publication activity.
Nurkhat Zhakiyev has experience managing research projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, GIZ, UNDP, RAENG, ISTC, IsDB and DAAD. His research interests cover interdisciplinary areas at the intersection of energy, ecology, STEM, IT and data analytics.
In 2025-2026, he completed a research fellowship at Harvard University under the Bolashak Program, specializing in alternative energy.
The appointment of the new Vice-Rector is aimed at further developing the research potential of KazGASA, expanding international scientific cooperation, implementing research and innovation projects, and strengthening the Corporation’s modern research environment.
